Thai dramas generally follow two people who fall in love with each other over the course of the series. Though some stray from these conventions, most adhere to them, especially if they're popular among Thai viewers. Like dramas from other countries, Thai dramas feature very distinctive, though often formulaic, characters and narrative conventions. However, Thai TV soap operas have begun to become popular in Vietnam as Song Kram Nang Fah aired successfully in that country. Vietnam's VTV1 broadcasts Thai soap operas one day after showing in Thailand, usually not dubbed or subtitled. Malaysia used to broadcast some Thai soaps with considerable success, but currently Thai soap operas are almost absent on local television, but are sold on DVDs two to three months after being broadcast on Thai television. Thai TV soap operas are popular overseas in countries such as Cambodia and Laos. They are dubbed into Chinese before being broadcasted. In China, most Thai dramas are aired on Anhui Television.

It is, however, still legal to sell and purchase lakorns physically and digitally. In Cambodia, several television channels aired Thai dramas instead of local ones until they were banned from broadcast in early 2003. Thai dramas are becoming more and more popular overseas. Therefore, channels also compete for who has the most popular celebrities signed under them and try to attract viewers through their cast. Unlike other Asian countries, Thai actors and actresses are also often not signed to a third-party entertainment company but directly to the broadcaster. The largest broadcasters are Channel 3, Channel 5, and Channel 7, as well as, to a lesser extent, Channel 9. Sometimes, if a drama is popular enough, it is re-run several years after its initial release, generally in the afternoon. Featured dramas are usually broadcast right after the news to gather more views, while smaller productions and shorter dramas are broadcast between 17:00 and 18:00. In July 2019, the Weekly Address was discontinued shortly before the new cabinet was established after the 2019 Thai general election. The Weekly Address would end between 20:50 and 21:00, after which the lakorns would resume broadcast. After the 2014 Thai coup d'état, the lakorns were briefly interrupted or broadcast on delay on Friday nights due to simulcast of the government-required Weekly Address by the Prime Minister of Thailand.
They are generally shown at prime-time on Thai television channels, starting at 20:30. The most common timeslots are Monday–Tuesday, Wednesday–Thursday, and Friday–Sunday. A channel will usually broadcast three dramas at once during different timeslots, each featuring a separate story. When internationally broadcast, the runtime is around 45 minutes per episode.
